Dear ESCFS members and participants,

Dear friends and colleagues

First and foremost I hope you and your families are all well.

By now you may be aware that, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the recent council meeting of the ISCFS voted that the forthcoming ISCFS Congress which was scheduled for Oct 2021 in China will be postponed to Oct 2022. Thereafter the ISCFS congress meetings will continue to take place every 2 years i.e. 2024, 2026 etc.

You will also be aware that last year I took a decision to postpone the ESCFS biennial meeting from Sept 2020 in Oxford to Sept 2022. Of course it would now not be sensible to run the ESCFS meeting within a month of the newly scheduled ISCFS meeting. I have been closely monitoring the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on planned international conferences. The current predictions are that the healthcare effects of the coronavirus crisis throughout Europe and the rest of the world will, unfortunately, extend significantly into 2021 and beyond and so I feel I have no choice but to again postpone the ESCFS meeting in Oxford to Sept 2023. This way we can have a meaningful face to face meeting rather than a potential virtual meeting. Thereafter the ESCFS meetings will continue to be biennial and run in the ‘odd' years - i.e 2023, 2025 etc rather than the previous ‘even' years and so continue to alternate with the ISCFS meetings.

I have secured new dates for the venues as Friday 8th September and Saturday 9th September 2023 with the Thursday before (i.e. 7th September) as a KLS Martin and DePuy Synthes pre meeting workshop (as our major sponsors).

Whilst this means that we will not have had an ESCFS meeting for 5 years since Athens, we nevertheless will have had the opportunity to attend an interim ISCFS meeting in China in 2022. Hopefully by September 2023, we will all have had time to recover from the inevitable exhaustion caused by this global pandemic crisis and the important additional opportunity to catch up on our cancelled elective surgical workload.

I plan to keep the Oxford venue, eminent guest speakers and social programme for September 2023 so that the true spirit and soul of the ESCFS meeting will be maintained without compromise.

Best wishes,

Mr David Johnson MA BM BCh DM FRCS (Plast)

Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon
